The form of mesothelioma that is found in the peritonium region is called peritoneal mesothelioma. The abdominal mesothelium membrane is named the peritonium. Even within the region of mesothelioma, peritoneal instances are considered rare with only about thirty percent of all instances being peritoneal mesothelioma. It is thought that patients suffering from this variety of mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos at a few point in the past..
The length of exporse required for contracting peritoneal mesothelioma has not been found at the moment. Usual symptoms include swelling of the abdomen region, abdominal pain, weight loss, lumps in the abdomen region, anemia and an obstruction of the small and/or large intestine. Almost all patients suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma will lose their lives to it in the end.
A cure has not been found and efforts are generally made in the region of lengthening life expectancy. The cells of the peritonium membrane are affected in a way that is not clear by asbestos fibers. With the fibers lodged, the membrane itself begins to thicken.
Fluids start to build up in the abdominal area. The draining of this fluid along with cytoreductive surgery and removal of the tumors present represent the general treatment methods done today. This is then combined with chemotherapy and radiation if the situation warrants it.
In theory, the chemotherapy and radiation attempts to kill the rapidly dividing cells as successfully as possible. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is also an alternative where the chemicals are delivered directly into the peritonium. The survival rate statistics of mesothelioma are not encouraging, they vary from as little as 4 months to as long as decades in rare cases, but usually, the survival period is from 12 to 18 months. Treatment may increase this for up to five years or more. How a patient reacts to treatment is not possible to foresee at this point in time.
Unfortunately, the cast majority of instances see the patients too far ahead in the spread of mesothelioma for surgery or chemotherapy to have an affect. Improving the patients quality of life is concentrated on in cases where the peritoneal mesothelioma is in advanced stages.
